The cottage had a dilapidated 1960s rear extension full of asbestos. They wanted a functional, comfortable family home to adequately accommodate their family of four. Optimising the views to the park and reusing as much of the materials as possible were the main concerns.

Renovation of existing federation house.
The existing house is on a relatively small block of land in Drummoyne. It has a beautiful old character front which was retained. The backyard had an 80's style pebblecrete pool and a fantastic frangipani tree which we wanted to highlight. Keeping and updating the pool was a big part of creating a home that could become a hub for family and friends.
The challenge was to integrate the pool and tree into the new living spaces without feeling divided by a pool fence. This was done by building an outdoor living space, comprising of a deck and recycled brick wall, adjacent to the new living spaces on a higher level than the pool so that the pool fence "disappears" from view.
We brought the house up as close as possible to the frangipani tree so that it provides shade and dappled light in summer to both the living on the ground floor and the master bedroom on the first floor. The master bedroom balcony cantilevers out into the canopy of the tree.
We also designed a pool pavilion that sits at the back of the existing pool to extend the new living spaces and incorporate the tree and the pool as the centre of the new design. The idea was to create an additional space but have it open and feel connected to the main house and other entertaining areas. A bathroom, kitchenette and entertainment area are part of this but recessed from view.
There are many other features we've incorporated into the design but that are hidden in order to not clutter or distract the eye. Things such as a bench that is used as a clothes line and exercise area, seating that incorporates hidden eskies for entertaining and a custom 600 bottle wine cellar.
The existing brick wall of the old house is exposed in the stair to create the transition between old and new.
